I ended up getting this for the Babe's grandbaby; Kid's due too soon for me to order something online and get it done by April. She doesn't like Pooh (blasphemy!), and doesn't like pastels, and this is the least cutesy/pastel I could find. I'm taking out the prayer as it stands and replacing it with this, in a purple:

For the new morning and its light,
For the rest and shelter of the night,
For good health and food and love and friends,
For every gift the Goddess sends,
We thank thee. Blessed Be.

I've also changed the cloth, from their white white 14-count to a linen 11. The cream ribbon floss shows up better, and it makes the colors look less pastel.

The point of this ramble is - I think I'm going to try designing more pagan/goth baby patterns. I'd've done it for this one if I'd had more time! I was very disappointed by what's out there, and I know that as my kids get older and have babies they'll want designs that are less fluffly.

What do you think? Do I need to copyright designs? How would I go about doing that? I can make a website to sell them, and/or sell them on eBay.

Doesn't the "its" in the first line not need the apostrophe? Other than that, I love the poem!

I did a wedding sampler for a friend once where I removed the stupid garden poem it had had and used some sort of quote about marriage instead. Looked great!

Yes, you do need to copyright designs, but that's pretty easy. Register them, don't just rely on the default copyright. The copyright office's official site: http://www.copyright.gov/

I'll be happy to answer any questions to the best of my ability, as I'm an amateur copyright geek of sorts!

I remembered you're a copyright geek and hoped you would answer! :) I will definitely ask questions once I have something to copyright.

I have a stitch I'm trying to finish for my dad (dunno if it'll be done by Father's Day now but I'm hoping) - I'm taking the quote it came with off and replacing it, too. Seems to be a common thing!

Registering is pretty easy. You get a copy of the appropriate (which is sometimes hard to figure out) form-- they may have them in PDF form now, downloadable-- fill it out, and send it along with 2 best-quality copies of the piece (probably design and instructions for yours) and the check. Then, In The Fullness Of Time (last time I did it they were saying a couple months and it was actually a year+), you'll get back the official registration. The registration officially occurs when you send it in, though, not when you get the certificate.

For a long time after 9/11 the copyright office wasn't accepting US mail; you had to send stuff FedEx etc. (Oh the irony...) You should check on that before sending it.

I think that's a great idea. And maybe you could put together kits, rather than just designs (cloth, needle, floss)?

I like that idea - I prefer buying kits when I'm in a hurry, and frankly it's cheaper. I can always make changes with what I have at home if I need/want to.

Which means I could find out how to get floss/cloth at wholesale!

almost totally unrelated question... I'm interested in learning more about pagan rituals and traditions. Could you rec some books or other sources of information?
