It should be interesting how this plays out over the next week. The horrible political climate here is one reason I'm not teaching - I'd never be able to deal with it.

I've been following it; the Guardian carries it. What is the situation in Portland? It sounds awful.

Short story: There is "no money". The teachers have made offers (working for free, less raise) but since it's not perfect, the school board turns it down. We have no Superintendent, no one wants the job. People complain that money could be cut but no one is clear where. The increase in state taxes (Measure 28) was turned down. We will have the shortest school year in the country, I believe.

Long story: This will give you a more comprehensive look at the problems, but it's a lot of reading.
