...or newspaper help ([livejournal.com profile] merlaan)?

I'm trying to find the obituary for one Leon Garatie, of Newbury Park, CA; date of death 1/5/2002. I'm not having any luck on search yet, and, frankly, I consider LJ a form of search now, knowing all you brilliant people.

Thanks in advance.

ETA: I'm sorry this is kind of terse - this is CJ's dad, and she just found out tonight by doing a search. The family hasn't contacted her at all, and no matter how she tries to tell herself they don't matter, of course, they fucking do.

That's in the area that we were intending to move. I can't find any newspaper down there that keeps online archives past the most current month. The Ventura County Star (http://www.insidevc.com/vcs/home/0,1375,VCS_224,00.html) is the best bet for the paper that would have posted the original obituary. They may (should) have it in their records, if you'd like to contact them.

I've tried, but I'm not getting anywhere. The Ventura County Star isn't one of the newspapers that feeds into Lexis-Nexis; the paper's online obit index only goes back a few weeks; and the CA death index is only updated [online] through 1997. She might be able to call the paper and have them check the morgue.

Sorry. :/

Oh. I just realized that maybe you're not a newspaper person. A 'morgue' is where papers keep their archives.

Yeah, isn't family great like that? Please give her my condolences.
