A political rant, for your amusement
Aug. 2nd, 2003 09:34 amI'm a big homo. I'd like the wedding stuff just as much as the next girl. But you know why I'm not commenting much about this gay marriage flap? BECAUSE IT'S SLEIGHT OF HAND!!!
Bill Clinton lied. "I did not have sexual relations with that woman." Whom did that hurt? Bill, Hilary, Monica, Chelsea, their friends.
George W. lied! Paul Wolfowitz admitted to Vanity Fair that weapons of mass destruction were not really the main reason for invading Iraq: "The decision to highlight weapons of mass destruction as the main justification for going to war in Iraq was taken for bureaucratic reasons.... [T]here were many other important factors as well." Whom has that lie hurt? How about the 1000s of Iraqis and Americans and British and Canadians and god knows who else killed in this war, which is costing us billions of fucking dollars every day - STILL.
Yet in the interview in which he basically admits his lies, he also says...."but hey, look at this hand!! Gay Marriage!!!!" And we eat it up with a spoon. What's on the headlines of all the papers?? Not "President lied about WMD, costing billions." Nope, all the headlines are about Gay Fucking Marriage.
So yeah. I'd love to get married, but right now, I'd rather, say, not be one of the zillions of people unemployed because of Bush's economy. So I could afford a wedding, instead of worrying about paying my fucking mortgage.
So please - take a minute to focus on what Bush doesn't want you to see. Watch the other hand.

Date: 2003-08-02 11:05 am (UTC)So Yes, the sudden outcry about gay marrages is a diversion; the simple fact that it was COVERED by American media should tell you that much. But frankly, I'm glad to see the American public paying attention to ANYTHING this administration has done on a domestic level. Which of us is more cynical?

Date: 2003-08-02 01:12 pm (UTC)I heard a visiting fellow in religion at Princeton talk about the potential Episcopalian schism over gay marriage on NPR's All Things Considered yesterday and he said something that really resonated with me: by making such a big deal about gay marriage with the argument that the Bible condemns homosexuality, it's making the statement that the few mentions of it in the Bible are more important than the far greater number of mentions of other issues like idolatry and adultery, and that is a far more dramatic statement than the great schism between the Roman Catholic and Orthodox churches nearly a millenia ago.
