I'm a big homo. I'd like the wedding stuff just as much as the next girl. But you know why I'm not commenting much about this gay marriage flap? BECAUSE IT'S SLEIGHT OF HAND!!!

Bill Clinton lied. "I did not have sexual relations with that woman." Whom did that hurt? Bill, Hilary, Monica, Chelsea, their friends.

George W. lied! Paul Wolfowitz admitted to Vanity Fair that weapons of mass destruction were not really the main reason for invading Iraq: "The decision to highlight weapons of mass destruction as the main justification for going to war in Iraq was taken for bureaucratic reasons.... [T]here were many other important factors as well." Whom has that lie hurt? How about the 1000s of Iraqis and Americans and British and Canadians and god knows who else killed in this war, which is costing us billions of fucking dollars every day - STILL.

Yet in the interview in which he basically admits his lies, he also says...."but hey, look at this hand!! Gay Marriage!!!!" And we eat it up with a spoon. What's on the headlines of all the papers?? Not "President lied about WMD, costing billions." Nope, all the headlines are about Gay Fucking Marriage.

So yeah. I'd love to get married, but right now, I'd rather, say, not be one of the zillions of people unemployed because of Bush's economy. So I could afford a wedding, instead of worrying about paying my fucking mortgage.

So please - take a minute to focus on what Bush doesn't want you to see. Watch the other hand.

I totally agree. Bush is stirring this gay marriage thing up so that the hatred and backlash will start whamming the gay people (whom he despises anyway) and he can slide by with his whole "Oh I lied to get us into an unprecidented preemptive war with someone I didn't like much and to illegally seize the Iraqi oil fields for my own use."

WHERE has yellowcake-gate gone on the news? Where oh where?

I definitely agree. It's yet another distraction. To be honest, I thought the whole Iraq thing, which suddenly came up last summer, was merely meant to distract people from Halliburton and Cheney and Enron-like scandals...

I'd gladly let Bush focus on my other hand, which is currently flipping him off.

I agree with you that the sudden announcment about gay marriges is largely a diversionary tactic because our "president" can smell an impeachment storm brewing, and want's to ease some of the heat. It's ironic, however, when you consider that the War he is drawing our attention away from was, itself, started as a diversionary tactic to draw our attention away from OTHER civil rights violations being committed here at home. If there is one thing that your average American LOVES, it's to see a good ass kickin'. So while the public sat drooling in front of their televisions watching bombs hit caves in Afghanistan, the Bush administration was pushing through the Department of Homeland Security, easing restricitions on phone tapping and video survellience warrants, and ratifying the read-by-none-but-signed-by-all U.S.A.P.A.T.R.I.O.T. Act.
So Yes, the sudden outcry about gay marrages is a diversion; the simple fact that it was COVERED by American media should tell you that much. But frankly, I'm glad to see the American public paying attention to ANYTHING this administration has done on a domestic level. Which of us is more cynical?

Americans are fucking dumb. I totally know that gay marriage shit is to deflect attention away from soldiers dying in Iraq and a deficit that will soon rival Reagan's. BOOO.

I find it interesting that conservatives have found a way to recall Governor Davis because the California deficit grows by a billion dollars a month, but no one says anything when our "president" increases the National deficit 50 TIMES as quickly. Again, it's really remarkable how the circle jerk works; The gay marrige flap distracts people from the fact that no one (Iraqui's included) wants our troops in Iraq, and the "pre-emptive strike" in Iraq is a diversion from the troubling policies at home.

As long as Evil is your flavor of choice, then it really is a machana de superbum.

I think it's less an attempt to divert attention and more an attempt to kiss the homophobic asses of his power base, the religious right, to get them in line for the next presidential campaign. Of course it could be both.

Indeed. The more I hear about gay marriage on the TV news, the more I worry that we're not hearing about more urgent life-affecting things going on.

I heard a visiting fellow in religion at Princeton talk about the potential Episcopalian schism over gay marriage on NPR's All Things Considered yesterday and he said something that really resonated with me: by making such a big deal about gay marriage with the argument that the Bible condemns homosexuality, it's making the statement that the few mentions of it in the Bible are more important than the far greater number of mentions of other issues like idolatry and adultery, and that is a far more dramatic statement than the great schism between the Roman Catholic and Orthodox churches nearly a millenia ago.

Problem solved. You can get married in Toronto or Vancouver and still be pissed off at Bush. :)

But see, that DOESN'T really solve the problem, except from a "you know and I know and that makes it ok" point of view. You can go to Canada and get married, but the fact will still remain that if Bush manages to "codify" marrage here in the US, then your Canadian union won't be worth the paper the certificate is printed on here. You STILL won't be able to file joint taxes, apply for loans as a single entity, or even do something as simple but important as stay with your partner through the entirety of an Emergency Room visit, simply because your union isn't recognized as legal in this country. It's a very frustrating thing, when the inmates run the asylum.
